The “Ugly Outlaw Turkey Red” bandana.

$15.00

The “Ugly Outlaw Turkey Red” bandana is a size 19 1/2 inches x 21 1/2 inches. It has been tattered and made to look worn for that old time vintage feel.

Arrival in America

By the mid-1800s, red printed cotton bandanas became extremely common in the United States. Cowboys, railroad workers, miners, farmers, and laborers used them because they were cheap, durable, and useful for:

* Dust protection
* Sweat rags
* Neck protection from sun
* Makeshift masks or bandages
* Signaling cloths

The classic Turkey Red bandana became associated with the American frontier and Old West partly because:

* The red dye held up well in harsh conditions
* The printed white paisley patterns hid dirt and wear
* They were widely available through general stores and catalogs

The paisley pattern

Most Turkey Red bandanas used paisley or floral-style motifs. Those designs actually trace back much further to Persian and Indian textile traditions, especially Kashmir shawl patterns. European mills adapted those designs for cotton printing, and they eventually became standard on American bandanas.

Cowboys and the Old West

In the late 1800s, many working cowboys wore red or dark-colored bandanas around the neck. The bright red Turkey Red versions became iconic because they photographed and illustrated well in later Western art and films.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does an Ugly Outlaw hat come with an inside sweat band?

Yes!!!! Ugly Outlaw WANTS you to sweat in them! It’s adds to the character! Get that natural outlaw sweat ring around the crown! I specialize in Western character hats similar to but not necessarily exact in design to historic cowboys and gunslingers both historically and cinematically.

Custom and personalized orders

If you have a style, color and size in mind then feel free to write to Ugly Outlaw and let me know. I may be booked up and it may take a few weeks but I'll try my hardest to make it? Let’s chat and we’ll figure it out.

Why is shipping so much?

Shipping is not only calculated by the weight but also by the size of the box needed to ship a hat in. Location plays a huge role in the Price as well. Many times Ugly Outlaw has eaten the cost because we didn’t charge enough. If you live in California or close to Los Angeles then shipping may be considerably cheaper. If this is the case we can gladly refund to your personal PayPal account. Ugly Outlaw takes great care and consideration when shipping the hats. I custom make a proper, sturdy hat box to keep the hat from shifting around while on its journey.

Do you hand make your hats?

Yes! The majority of the hats on the site are handmade. On some occasions I will restore a vintage hat by giving it a new shape and look . Those hats will always be labeled as “Restored” with a description. Making hats is a process. A hat can sometimes take a week to make. A blank piece of felt or beaver fur is made wet with hot water, it’s molded over a particular hat block of whatever size I choose to make that day, it’s ironed, steamed, sanded, steamed some more, shaped, then sprayed with hardener, shaped even more, then the band is added, etc, and so on.

How do you price your hats?

Great question! Each hat is priced accordingly based on a few things. The main thing being the type of felt. 100% wool can range between $200-$300 depending on the amount of time and effort put into it. 100% hare (rabbit) can range between $300-$500 and beaver fur goes for $500-$900, once again depending on the amount of time, effort and materials. Another factor is the weight of the fur which is measured in grams. For example, a western weight 165g hat would be a higher price since it is thicker and more durable.

Do you make straw hats?

Yes! Message me for details.

Do you accept returns?

No. ALL SALES ARE FINAL!!!! Please make sure your hat size is correct. Please measure your head and let me know both inches and centimeters so I can get an exact size for you. Please don’t base the size on a hat you already own quite simply because a lot of brands vary in sizes and are off in one direction or the other. For example, a hat may be a 7 1/8 but another brand may call that a 7 1/4.
